The Folly of Gallbladder Removal

I was listening to Charlie Munger's speech "The Psychology of Human Misjudgment."  In it he talks about a doctor who thought removing the gall bladder was a really good thing to do.  I was dating someone over the holidays, and they decided to have their gall bladder removed. I was getting an eye examination and the nurse mentioned that a lot of people my age were having their gall bladder removed.  Apparently it is the thing to do. Now I am not a medical doctor, but I do have an opinion, one that was partly formed during my youth when everyone was running around to remove the tonsils. If you don't know what something does, then perhaps you shouldn't hop on the bandwagon to remove it. I would be a fit man if I removed the parts from my car when I don't know what function they perform.

Conclusion of eye examination.

So I went to my very first eye examination ever. My goal was to get perfect vision.  I had looked through my family member's pair of glasses and thought it was so cool that I'd go get my eyes checked out. Well luckily the eye doctor said that I have perfect vision, and basically when I put on the family members glasses it 'went too far.'  If I had my own pair of glasses it would cause headaches and other problems later on. $10 copay and out I go except for one thing, I can't see anything!  The guy dilated my eyes and told me it'll take hours before this wears off. So yes I'm sitting here in the dark of my work office typing away with my eyes completely closed.  I've no idea if I'm making any mistakes or not, but I'm probably not. That's because of something called testable fluency in the basics.  Basically you learn the basics so well that they can test you in them and you'll 100% that test every time.  Who needs a spell checker

Dentist Part 2

The visit to the dentist was nothing like I thought it'd be. So I arrived an hour early and was immediately taken to the back.  This time I didn't even have to sign any paperwork saying that I would pay the bill immediately.  I didn't have to read through five pages explaining how their pricing may be more expensive because the local market is different.  I didn't have to read through a pamphlet explaining how the insurance company makes up its own maximum benefit for each procedure regardless of how much it cost, and will only pay up to the maximum yearly benefit. But enough of being sidetracked. Once I got to the back I realized that the person cleaning my teeth was different.  You see this other person informed that I had to get my teeth cleaned through her and she would only be available at the one time on the one day, and when I told her I already had an appointment on that day she didn't entertain the notion of rescheduling.  So I pointed out that y
